What Is Custom Deck Building?
Custom deck building goes beyond a standard rectangular platform to create a structure with a unique footprint, built-in features, or specialized design elements tailored to your property. This might mean curved edges, built-in benches and planters, integrated lighting, or a shape that works around mature trees or an irregular yard. Watertown, MN homeowners choose custom building when a standard deck layout simply will not deliver what they actually want from their outdoor space.
Why This Matters for Your Home
Custom features require more careful structural planning than a standard deck, since built-in elements, curves, and non-standard framing all change how load moves through the structure. A custom design built without accounting for these details can develop weak points at the very features that made the deck special in the first place, like a built-in bench that loosens or a curved edge that does not hold its shape over time.
Our Process
Concept development
We start with your vision, whether that is a specific feature, shape, or overall feel, and translate it into a workable layout.
Structural engineering for custom elements
Non-standard framing for curves, built-ins, or elevation changes is planned to carry load correctly, not just to look right.
Skilled carpentry execution
Custom cuts, curved framing, and built-in features are constructed by carpenters experienced in non-standard work, not just straight board installation.
Detail finishing
Custom decks get extra attention at finish, since unique features often have more edges, joints, and transitions than a standard deck.
What to Expect
Custom builds start with a more involved design phase than a standard deck, since we need to work out exactly how features like built-in seating or curved edges will be framed. Construction timelines run longer than a standard build, reflecting the additional carpentry involved. We keep you updated closely throughout, since custom work often involves decisions along the way that a standard build does not.
